LUMDING -SILCHAR 'BROAD GAUGE' RAILWAY LINE


RAILWAYS MOVES FURTHER UP THE NORTH-EAST; LUMDING -SILCHAR 'BROAD GAUGE' RAILWAY LINE BECOMES OPERATIONAL 
India is still moving towards boasting a 100 percent rail connectivity.
Railway took another step in that direction with opening of a 210-km long new line in the North- East connecting Lumding to Silchar over a broad guage network.
The region makes its debut on the Railway Map with flagging off a goods train while the Passenger Services will follow soon.
The new line will boost connectivity in the North-Eastern Region and work as Lifeline for Bark Valley in Assam and the States of Tripura, Manipur & Mizoram
These parts are dependent on this line for supply of food grains, fertilisers and petroleum products among other goods. 

KEY POINTS:
Lumding-Silchar section is Phase-1 of the two phase broad gauge line project in this area.
Phase-I provides seamless Broad Guage connectivity to Barak Valley of Assam with the rest of the country.
This Rs 3500 Crore national project is not short of an engneering marvel overcoming difficult hilly terrain, geologially unstable hills and difficult law & order challenges to get through.
It passes through 21 tunnels and have 75 major bridges and 340 minor bridges along the track.
The project - sanctioned in 1996-97 - was declared a National Project in 2004.

FUTURE EXPANSION:
The completion of Phase - II (likely by March, 2016) will put states of Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Broad Gauge Railway Map as well.
The phase-II consists of gauge conversion of three sections namely;
 Badarpur – Kumarghat, Baraigram - Dullabcherra and Silchar-Jiribam.

1. JOHN NASH WON ABEL PRIZE 2015:

A. Nobel laureate John F Nash won the Abel prize 2015 for his work on partial differential equations.
B. John Nash will share the prize with Louis Nirenberg, professor emeritus at New York university courant institute of Mathematical Science.
C. John Nash, on American Mathematician and Louis Nirenberg, a Canadian, American Mathematician will share the prize money of 76000 U.S. Dollar. 
NOTE: - JOHN Nash shared the nobel prize in economic sciences with game theorists reinhard selten and john harsanyi in 1994.

2. ADB BROADCASTED ASIAN DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK 2015:

A. Asian development bank broadcasted asian development outlook report titled, “financing Asia’s future growth”.
B. The report highlighted that India will grow at the rate of 7.4percent in FY 2014, 7.8 percent in FY 2015 and 8.2 percent in FY 2016.
C. According to report Asia will grow at a rate of 6.3 percent in 2015 and 2016 (same as 2014).

3. INDIA SIGNED 300 MILLION US DOLLAR LOAN AGREEMENT WITH ADB:

A. India has signed a 300 million US dollar loan agreement withAsian development bank to improve connectivity in NE Region.
B. Union Ministry of finance and Asian Development Bank have signed a loan agreement to improve road connectivity along the North Bengal-North Eastern (NB-NE).
C. The agreement was signed between Tarun Bajaj, joint Secretary (multilateral Institutions) in the Department of Economic affairs of ministry of Finance and Teresa Kho, ADB’s country Director in India.
About ADB: - ADB is a Regional development bank established on 22nd August 1966 with its headquarter in Manila, Philippines. It has 67 members currently from 31 initially. Japan holds the largest proportion of share followed by U.S. and China.

4. RBI SIGNED CURRENCY SWAP AGREEMENT WITH SRI LANKA:

A. India’s central bank, Reserve Bank of India has signed a currency swap agreement with the Central Bank Of Sri Lanka.
B. A 400 million US Dollar currency swap agreement is signed between the central Bank of two nations.
C. The agreement is valid for a time period of 3 years during which central bank of Sri Lanka can make withdrawls of US Dollar or Euro in multiple tranches upto a maximum of 400 million US Dollar or its equivalent.

5. UNION GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED RS. 250CRORE TO ANDHRA PRADESH:

A. Union Government of India has Sanctioned Rs. 250crore Rupeeto Andhra Pradesh to set up Polavaram SPV.
B. A special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the implementation of the polavaram multipurpose Irrigation project will be set up in Andhra Pradesh.
C. 250crore Rupee sanctioned by the Union government is in addition to the 100crore rupee allotted for the project in 2015-16 union Budget.
NOTE: - The project is constructed on the river Godavari in the west Godavari district of     Andhra Pradesh.

6. UNION MINISTRY OF COAL LAUNCHED ELECTRONIC COAL PROJECTS MONITORING PORTAL.

A. UNION Ministry of coal launched electronic coal projects monitoring portal.
B. E-CPMP is launched for tracking projects that entail on investment related to coal.
C. The portal is launched with an aim to enhance efficiency and transparency in the ministry’s functioning.
NOTES :- Portal has been developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC).

7. ATAL BIHARI VAJHPAYEE HONOURED WITH BHARAT RATNA:

A. Former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajhpayee is honoured with the prestigions Bharat Ratna.
B. Country’s highest civilion award Bharat Ratna is conferred to Atal Bihari Vajhpayee  at his residence by the president of India,Pranab Mukherjee.
NOTE:- Other than Atal Bihari Vajhpayee, Madan Mohan malviya was choosen to be  honoured with Bharat Ratna in 2014.

8. DRONIER CRASHED IN GOA:

A. INDIAN Navy’s Dronier Aircraft crashed off the Goa coast.
B. Commander Nikhil kuldip Joshi was rescued while the other two, Lt. Kiran Shekhawat and Lt. Abhinay Nagori were found dead.
C. The Aircraft had 3 officers, 2pilots and 1 women observer.
NOTE: - Lt. Kiran shekhawat was the first women officer in Indian Navy martyered on duty.

1. INDIA SINGED 6 AGREEMENTS WITH QATAR:

India and Qatar signed 6 agreements to increase commercial and economic exchanges between the two nations.
The deal was signed in New Delhi between the Prime minister of India Narendra Modi and Emir of Qatar, sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The six agreements were as follows:
Agreement on transfer of sentenced persons.
MoU for co-operation in the field of information and communication technology.
MoU between ministry of earth sciences and Qatar Meteorological department for scientific and technical cooperation.
MoU between diplomatic institute of MOFA, Qatar and Foreign Service Institute, MEA
MoU for co-operation in the field of Radio and Television.
Agreement for Mutual Co-operation and Exchange of News.
 Note:    The deals have a special focus on the make in India Initiative.

2. BIOLOGICALLY USEFUL NITROGEN DISCOVERED ON MARS:

NASA’s curosity rover found evidence of nitrogen on the surface of mars.
Nitrogen was found in the form of Nitric Oxide which was released when Martian sediments were heated.
The Discovery is significant because of the critical role of nitrogen as the building block of RNA and DNA which control life processes.

3. TWITTER LAUNCHES A NEW APP

Twitter launches a new app , ‘ Periscope’.
Periscope is a streaming video application. It allows anyone to steam live video to a wide audience with their smartphone.


4. MINISTERY OF RAILWAYS CONSTITUTED AJAY SHANKAR COMMITTEE:

Ministry of Railways has constituted Ajay Shankar committeeto review PPP cell functioning.
Ajay Shankar is a former secretary, Department of Industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

5. CCEA APPROVED THE NATIONAL SUPER COMPUTING MISSION:

Union Cabinet committee on Economic Affairs under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved theNational Supercomputing mission.
The National Super Computing Mission is aimed at bringing thehigh performance computing (HPC) facilities.
The mission will be implemented at an estimated cost of 4500 crore rupees over a period of seven years.
This mission will be implemented Jointly by DST and Deity.

Deity –  Department of Electronics and Information technology.
